From the series: Americana.

Grain Mill, Wilson, Kansas.

In the 1973 film Paper Moon, directed by Peter Bogdanovich, a pivotal scene unfolds at a grain mill in Wilson, Kansas. This setting serves as the backdrop for a significant plot development where Moses Pray (Ryan O’Neal) secures $200 from Mr. Robertson, the brother of the man responsible for the death of Addie Loggins’ (Tatum O’Neal) mother. The mill, portrayed by the Sunflower Coal buildings along the railroad in Wilson, provides an authentic Depression-era ambiance that enhances the film’s historical context .

The choice of this location contributes to the film’s overarching aesthetic, characterized by its black-and-white cinematography and portrayal of 1930s rural Kansas. The stark, utilitarian architecture of the mill underscores the economic hardship of the era, aligning with the film’s themes of survival and resilience. This scene not only advances the narrative by establishing the financial arrangement between Moze and Addie but also encapsulates the film’s blend of humor and pathos, set against the backdrop of the American Midwest during the Great Depression.

This picture was taken on a cross country road trip in the summer of 2024.
